NEWCASTLE speedster Daniel Magin has to be cleared of stress fractures in his left ankle before taking his place in the NSW Country team at next month's Australian Country Cricket Championships in Mackay.

The 19-year-old from Belmont is suffering from shin splints after returning last weekend from the Australian under-19 championships in Tasmania.

The right-arm fast bowler will have bone scans on his ankle later this week before a decision is made on his availability for the two-week tournament starting on January 6.

"I think I should be right but they want me to make sure," Magin said yesterday.

Maitland all-rounder Josh Trappel is on stand-by and will come into the team if Magin is ruled out.

Trappel played in the Central North side at the Country championships won by North Coast last month.

The Bush Blues have already lost their entire pace trio from last year after Merewether and Newcastle quick Michael Hogan was forced out last week with rib cartilage damage.

His injury followed the departure of Waratah-Mayfield's Burt Cockley and Illawarra's Adrian Ezquerro to Sydney.

Mark Ulcigrai has been called into the side to replace Hogan after he finished with the solid figures of 2-48 off 10 overs in a trial against a Sydney XI 10 days ago.

Several members of the Country team will be playing this weekend.

The three-day finals series of the SCG Country Cup start on Friday at Tamworth and Gunnedah with six Newcastle teams and Maitland left in the last 16.
